Hi All
I am about to undertake a basic oil and filter(s) change on my S2 Fulvia - the first time I will have gotten oily! and wondered if the "Collective" had any tips, recommendations, do's or do not's for Fulvia-specific issues - I have good knowledge of servicing Diesel engines and small petrol ones.
The very recent thread on Sump nuts was very helpful and a search through the website refers to an article in VL about servicing, but it also seems to suggest it might have been in another magazine? - I have VL's dating back some 12 years so if in there I might have it but it doesn't fall to hand.
So your help with all tips large or small would be appreciated.

Hi Paul

Ideally you want to do this when the oil is hot. You need a container > 5 litres. The oil filter will probably need a tool to release it. Maybe others have a better technique but I try to under as fast as I can and get the filter inverted. Unfortunately oil will spill out (sometimes not so much if the filter holds the oil) so a plastic bag/clothes under the housing over the starter motor will minimise the mess you will need to clean up afterwards. When you have filled and restarted the oil will take a few moments to build up pressure while filling the new oil filter. Then check the level again after stopping the engine and waiting 5 minutes as it will have gone down.

Hopefully you will have no problem with the sump plug. Sometimes I have had to put a jack under to tool /spanner to stop it spinning off if the plug is worn or damaged.

Less than a 5 litre can, from memory.  I use semisynthetic 10/40 from  my local motor factor - I see no need to contribute to Castrol's advertising costs, or Halford's profits!

Engine oil: 4 liters, gearbox oil 2.7 liters (2 drain plugs), top up steering box oil (80W-90 type). Apart from general servicing (brakes, tyres, electrics etc), it is important to add a few drops of engine oil to the small hole in the distributor baseplate (usually marked as "olio"). Fulvia engines are very sensitive to points gap (dwell angle), ignition timing and carb balancing.
As I am today carrying out annual maintenance on my S2 coupe, I found the thread of the gearbox rear drain hole damaged. Not wishing to take the gearbox out ( :-\), I made a tap by using an old drain plug, my Dremer, cutting oil and thread chaser. After repairing the thread, so far there is no leak and I hope it will stay like that. Andrea

Less than a 5 litre can, from memory.  I use semisynthetic 10/40 from  my local motor factor - I see no need to contribute to Castrol's advertising costs, or Halford's profits!

Probably classic 20-50 is better if the engine is worn....
