Title: For sale - Lambda aluminium head & related parts
Post by: ColinMarr on 29 March, 2019, 10:31:49 AM
The following advertisement is due to be in the April issue of Viva Lancia:

For sale: Lambda aluminium cylinder head with related parts

From the estate of the late John Turner - a new and unused aluminium head and parts that have been in storage for about ten years. Origins and provenance are unknown, but would have been intended for a late type 7th Series Lambda.

The head is a machined casting complete with side plates, studs, valve guides (not fitted) and some gaskets. There are no valve-seats and the head needs to be machined to take new seats. Spark plug threads are for modern 14mm plugs.

The other parts offered in this sale include: new valves, camshaft, rocker shaft assembly with cam followers and a set of used valves.

Everything has been safely stored and there are no blemishes – they are offered as a job lot with no documentation or guarantee. Photos of all parts are available on request and I am happy to try and answer any questions.

Offers in excess of £2000 will be considered, with a closing date of end May 2019. All proceeds will be to the Turner family. Buyer to arrange collection from Islington, north London. Contact Colin Marr – Tel 0208 8883 9069. colin.marr@blueyonder.co.uk

For those who enjoy looking at the finer parts of Lancia engineering, here are some more photos – camshaft, valve and rocker gear. Note the rockers have ball-race cam followers and the threaded end of the valves.

Narrow cams.  Very unusual "spring retainers"?  Lovely stuff, thank you for posting...

The head does not appear to have any valve seats fitted.  Normally there are hardened steel inserts.   Odd.

The description does acknowledge that: “There are no valve-seats and the head needs to be machined to take new seats.”  I think it likely that the heads were supplied like this for the user to decide what material to use for the valve seats and to have them fitted locally. New valve guides are supplied and look ready to be pressed in.

That's correct - the heads came without seat inserts. Some people chose to only fit them to the exhaust ports. Mine was like that, so I had hard seats fitted to the inlets as well.

I bought both of mine from John Vessey and they were fully machined and had hard seats fitted throughout as well as valve guides and larger valves.

I have an aluminium head here numbered '33' and believed to be of a very early consortium origin.  It has steel valve seats on the exhaust ports, but on the inlets the seat is milled into the bare aluminium.  I will have hardened seats fitted to all ports before using it.  The same configuration as my head turned up in Australia and was marked '20'.
