Title: Loss of reverse gear (B10)
Post by: brian on 11 July, 2018, 09:50:58 AM
In amidst the misery of the Augusta (to paraphrase Private Eye) see posts passim, was the mention of the loss of reverse gear on the B10 on the way back from SPR.
This morning I have got round to having a look. With not much hope I thought to inspect the gear shift linkage but all the front parts were hidden and looked very complicated so I turned my attention to the rear and it looked ok except very greasy and a bit loose where the M10 bolt goes through the U-shaped end of the long heavy rod from the front.
I cleaned it all off and the rubber of one of the 2 bushes looked tatty and it came away in my hand. Honest Guv, I hardly touched it.
To see if this was the problem I made up a quasi-bush with rolled up gaffer tape , squeezed it in and replaced the bolt.
Eureka! All works normally.
I suppose I ought to get a couple of new bushes (just asked Cavalitto) but I suspect I shall leave as is until it happens again as I will know what the problem is!!
So, my advice is always go for the easiest option as just occasionally it pays off.

That's good news, well done. Not sure I'd trust the duct tape though; couldn't you make a rubber bush from some workshop scrap material?

The front linkage on the bulkhead is indeed quite complicated, but very beautifully made. Your (and my) B10 has a different design at the top to the B21 and B12; typical Lancia. It isn't hard to dismantle or reassemble if the engine is out, but with it in, it's another story.

Try Robush if you have the dimensions.

You could try making one out of nylon or similar. It doesn't have to be rubber. When Maltby had the GT Aprilia (NGP50) Bob West and I made brass bushes for the complicated gear linkage, which worked a treat. It was one of the best steering column gear-changes I have ever experienced. Glad it wasn't anything more serious on your B10.

I remember going to Ramsgate in NPG 50 as a kid, Maltby lent it to my dad, flippin noisy in the back John

Good news indeed

Excellent that the fault was easily diagnosed and equally to get sorted.

I did nothing about this in 2018 but on the SPR in Scotland the gaffer tape gave up and my daughter lost reverse again. Another 1/2hr under the car sorted it but I will do the full Monty this time.
I would like to take off the whole link rod as the rubber boot at the front has almost completely disappeared and it will be easier to sort this and to drive out the outer metal from the bushes at the back off the car.
The front is, I think, just one nut and the rod with an eye held in the side but the set of pages I have copied from the parts book miss pp25-30!
Please - has anybody copies they can email to me?
