A tad too dangerous in those days!

I can still vividly remember in 1967 seeing on BBC television the fiery crash of Lorenzo Bandini’s Ferrari that led to his death three days later. Dangerous times indeed.

Great film. Dangerous but still fascinating. Perhaps it was because they were still 'cars'? An owner of a Morris Minor could still relate to a Grand Prix engine. It might have several more cylinders and carbs but it was all recognisable. Now the complexity is on another level. I watched the live coverage the other weekend of the Monaco Historique and loved every minute of it. Great shots like a head on view of two 80' GP cars fishtailing side by side as they accelerated in the rain up towards Tabac. It was followed by the Spanish GP and I have to say amateurs in older cars were much more entertaining even though this GP season has been good so far. Those shark nosed Ferraris - must qualify as one of the most beautiful GP cars of all time. What is the silver convertible that's filming some of it?

I agree with everything you said Stanley.  I watched the historics all day, and then in the evening watched the Spanish GP that I'd recorded.  I found the historics much more entertaining.  The highlights for me were seeing the Lotus 49, and then the sports cars (such an unusual sight at Monaco) on a wet track.  A lot of skill shown by the drivers!  With regard to the silver sports car, that had me baffled too.  The only car with a bonnet bulge anything like that that I can recall is the Mercedes 190SL.

I was thinking Mercedes too but thought a 300SL might have the right level of performance. However having checked I remember the 300 has two thin bonnet bulges rather than one larger one.

I think it's an E-type. You can see the rod from dash to the top of the screen for the rear view mirror at the centre of car and the central one of the 3 wipers.

You may be right William, but the 190 also had a rod-mounted mirror.  It only had two wipers but I'm not sure if what can be seen in the centre of the screen is part of a central (third) wiper or part of the right-side wiper.  What's your view on the lines down each side of the bonnet, inside the wing bulges?  If they are gaps, then they map to the 190 bonnet edges, but they may just be reflections. I'm still puzzled!

Norm, I think you're right. The shut lines of a conventional bonnet can be seen (especially in the sequence around the swimming pool section of the track). So not an E-type.

Those sun visors say Mercedes to me as well as a tiny hint of a headlamp bezel.
