Title: Favourite car museums? Post by: DavidLaver on 23 April, 2018, 04:19:34 PM Not sure why but I tend not to enjoy car museums while just about any air museum will soak up a day and I love to wander round a race paddock... What are people's favourite car museums in the UK? Is it worth me making the pilgrimage to any in Italy if I don't enjoy the UK museums? I think my problem is that many tend to big car parks with machines rammed in tight. I hadn't remembered going to the motorbike museum but I'd put someone else off by describing it "as a lot of front wheels". Perhaps many of the car museums are "lots of grills and lights". The Design Museum's recent "Ferrari: under the skin" WAS good. I went twice and still feel I missed bits. Title: Re: Favourite car museums? Post by: frankxhv773t on 23 April, 2018, 05:31:40 PM The Cotswold Motoring and Toy Museum in Bourton on the Water is a great little museum. It doesn't have a huge number of cars but is absolutely stuffed to the rafters with fascinating motoring ephemera.

Possibly it's because cars are too familiar whereas aircraft are always specks in the sky so it's good to see them close up and study the details. In fact a museum visit that still stands out for me was Duxford back in the mid 80's. The TSR2 was quite a monster close up. Also I suspect a walk around the public car park at the Revival will be better than most museum visits plus you get to see and hear some of them moving.

A visit to Chateau Savigny-les-Beaune is an amazing collection of jets props and helicopters combined with a large and rare Abarth and motor cycle museum. The wine is one of the best in Burgundy too. On the way back from Turin in 2006 we called in at Musee Henri Malarte. Near Lyon, 645 rue du Musee, 69270 Rochetaillee- Sur -Saone. Www.musee-malarte.com Amazing collection of old cars bikes and motorcycles, includes a lovely 1938 Astura, Bugattis, Osca, Talbot Lago single seater. the Espace popemobile, Edith Piaf's 1955 Packard Caribbean, Delahaye, a 1936 2cv prototype, Maserati 6c, one I don't know is a 1976 Marcadier sports car? Some trams, a hall full of Gordini. As well as many others. lots of early posters and motoring associated items. Well worth a visit. Brian 8227 8) |
