Title: Snapped subframe bolt
Post by: Rosco on 06 March, 2018, 12:16:18 PM
'lo lads and lassies.

Like a right eeyjit, I've only gone and snapped a front subframe bolt on my Zagato. It's the offside lower front one, and approximately a quarter of it is still up in the housing. Any advice/tips on removing it, other than 'good luck'?

Ta,

Ross.

Drill the centre out and use an easy-out but if it is rusted in you will bust the easy out.

Second method is to carefully drill the centre out and use a taper tap to clean out the rusty bits of thread.

Very tedious. If you mess the thread you could use an insert repair.

Thanks Tim, that's what I planned to do but thought I'd check ';O)

After a couple of false starts and a house move north, the Zagato will finally be seeing some action this year. After some tic, of course.

Cheers,

Ross.

If you can get at it then weld a nut to it - the heat will help release it.   I am not convinced about easy-out, they always snapped for me increasing the problem.   If the bolt is buried then I drill it out as centrally as possible and then fiddle around to try to get our the rest or, if I have been very precise, pass a tap.   Usually I have gone a bit eccentric and then I can get a fine screwdrive in and lever the side of the bolt out of the thread.  Basically what lancialulu says in fact!   If you can get it very hot it helps but I cannot quite remember how it all goes together, it is a few months since I last had the subframe out.

I guess it is buried? Be helpful to see a photo. Yes the Racing Z must come out to play this year!
