Title: LMC Goodwood Track Day - 31st March 2018 - Easter Saturday
Post by: sparehead3 on 09 January, 2018, 09:48:24 PM
Goodwood Trackday Saturday 31 March 2018

Sorry we are late!

After a torrid time over the last couple of months whilst the committee has been trying to get a better deal from Goodwood, we have finally bitten the bullet and accepted their terms for this year. This involves a 20% price hike but will includes free unlimited tea/coffee and a sandwich lunch per entrant. We tried to get this 'hospitality package' removed but to no avail. The club has managed to break even on this event for the past two years and has decided to limit the price increase to entrants to £25 for this year. This will result in the club subsidising the event to the tune of about £1000 if we get a full entry. So please please come and support your club by entering.

The event is  designed for all members and their friends who would like to drive a little quicker than today's current overcrowded roads allow and to let their cars demonstrate just how able they are. To this effect  we will be running cars in groups of just eight. On a 98dBA sound limit  day we could run ten cars but the formula of eight really does work for us, with plenty of empty track available to all plus enough track time available for even the keenest to be well satisfied with the mileage they can put in.

An entry form* is attached to this posting, all members will also receive an email copy of this message with the application Form.

We have trialled half day sessions over the last few years to give owners the chance to sample a trackday and hope that those who took advantage will want to book a full day this year. We are offering this option again this year, so a chance to try something new perhaps at a bargain price!

The day is also an important social event for members and no entry fee is charged for spectators. However a donation to the club coffers of £5 for your days entertainment would be appreciated and a pot will be available for this purpose in the pavilion.

Enter early or you may miss out

Enjoy Lancia

*Entry Form had a typing error - v2 of the form has now been attached

Can you not stick a DB slayer on it?

Currently:

107dB with group A exhaust. We put one of those contraptions on with the group A and it brought it down to 105dB and made the car very slow!
103dB with Evo exhaust. Might get to 101dB or 100dB.

98dB is production car quiet and it is never going to be that low.

The other option is to pay, turn up, fail the static test ask for a track side test. It would be an expensive day if that failed that also plus they are not obliged to do the track side test either.

I am planning on doing this event in my Fulvia, I have two "bombs" that i use on my porsche they reduce db from about 105 down to 98db on my track 993. they have universal fitment, happy to lend them to you if you want?

Thanks for the offer. I have a horrible evo exhaust tip at the moment which is oval shaped. We intend to hack it off over the winter and just have the 3" pipe sticking out. I might try also shoving some more material in to the back box and see if that helps.

As a matter of interest, what will you stuff the box with to quiten it down, reason for asking is that had a new ss back box supplied by Omicron about 10 years ago for my Fulvia 2c, that has gradually got louder, and i now need to do something about it, unfortunately Omicon's supplier is no longer in business so bang goes the warranty.

What is the condition of the box? If there is no rust it shoul be a simple enough job.

Thanks for that Richard, the box being stainless steel is in excellent condition, so either of these should do the trick, just need someone who can cut and weld stainless for me.

Dear reader,

Fascinating how threads develop!

Now back to the knitting!

We just have all day and morning sessions available now. It's very heartening to see how many members have entered so far. They will be joined by a good collection of Alfas, a couple of Maseratis plus a smattering of other marques. So to keep the domination of Lancia please enter soon or it may be too late!

Enjoy Lancia

Back tyre working hard - and the look on the passengers face...

The basic physics is just the same as it ever was for an Aprilia.

My first LMC track day (although just a spectator) and my first visit to Goodwood ticked off. It's a bit of a trek from North Staffordshire, and it was absolutely filthy weather both ways but thankfully mainly dry for the event itself.

The 25 Year Evo 2 photo opp was the excuse I need to pack everyone into the car and head down. Thanks to Steve Pilgrim for organising it and Tony for some great photos.

It was also good to get a Photo of my car with Simon Pimblett's K66 WRC.They were built within 48 hours of each other in April 1993. One was first registered in Turin, the other Vicenza. Both have made their way to the UK and were reunited at Goodwood 25 years later. It’s the feel-good story of the year!

A huge thank you to Brian and his team as well as the guys from Goodwood for a wonderful track day last weekend. It was my first go and will not be my last :)! I learnt a lot and had great fun, though my serious concentrating face in the photo doesn't reflect this! My fulvia performed beautifully especially with my brother behind the wheel when I really learnt the capabilities of the car whilst in expert hands!! Alison Ure. Weren’t you at Oulton Park on Friday? An even bigger trek down to Goodwood, only I went back to OP again on the Sunday and returned back home Monday 🙀

Seconding Alison, thank you indeed to Brian and everyone for the very enjoyable track day, and to Tony for the splendid photographs.

Pace David, in the photo of my blue Aprilia my passenger is telling me to go faster. The challenge in physics of getting hundreds of kilos of metal on wheels as fast as you dare round a track are I think much the same for all cars. The Aprilia suspension arrangement manages the physics quite well. The trailing arm geometry at the rear is a good match for that of the classic front layout, and the roadholding of the car is surprisingly tenacious. I was probably travelling faster than you think at the time the picture was taken.

Goodwood on the Saturday, Oulton on the Monday for British GT. That was wet too!!!

Cesare - if I remember right an Aprilia has the same tyres as an Aurelia and perhaps 200kg less weight so with the distortion in the photo I realise you are going quite a clip.  I think its Colin Marr who has a terrific photo of an Aprilia, from memory also at Goodwood, in a really big drift and of course there are any number of period photos of them racing.

...and an Aurelia will out corner a Delta HF.

I enjoyed looking at the Goodwood photos – they triggered lots of good memories. The Aprilias looked great and I can fully appreciate the sideways forces working away on Cesare’s car.

David, I remember the photo of an Aprilia cornering that you refer to, but it wasn’t mine and I can’t find my copy of it. As I recall, it looked as if it was drifting, but I think it was just the angle that it was being driven at. The attached photos of Aprilias cornering hard suggest to me that understeer would take over before proper drifting would occur. No matter – I have vivid memories of Aprilias cornering in a very impressive way – lots of body roll, squealing from tyres (and sometimes passengers!), but going round as if on rails! Happy days!

Thank you Colin for the tremendous photos.
I am particularly struck by the Aurelia in the second. Presumably it is a third series B20, to judge by the rear wheel angle, and travelling insanely fast. It would corroborate David's observations on the superiority of Aurelia to Delta handling, and also support the view of some that the de Dion rear axle on the later B20s was a step backwards.
