Title: Tacho noise
Post by: lancialulu on 08 January, 2018, 01:21:02 PM
I am sure this has been covered before but I cannot find it!

My Flavia 815 mechanical tacho (revcounter) has started to make a kind of screeching noise when the car is started after any short lay off period.

Before I investigate, is it just a case of undoing the cable and squirting in WD40 into the revcounter head bearing>

Anyone let me know their experiences please.

Tim

Tim,

Mine has an annoying light ticking noise that is related to engine speed, Could it be related ?

Hi Tim

If possible I would use more of a lubricant if possible than an easing oil like WD40. I usually find it is great to clear out out the gunk, but less good for long term use. Also not so keen on the smell that can hang around for a while.

I am regularly warned by an aircraft mechanic friend that WD40 is a moisture dispersant not a lubricant as he found to his cost on the throttle cable of a motorbike many years ago which the previous owner had "lubricated" with WD40. He says that once the solvent that makes it sprayable has gone it is more like glue. His throttle jammed open sending him through a set of iron railings and he carries the resulting tin collar bone to this day.

WD40 is good, but not the best for freeing off seized items, but as said above, it is not a lubricant!!! I favour GT85 as a good, light lubricant that does seem to get into all the tight spots!!!
