Title: Rear end clonking Post by: simonpen on 09 August, 2021, 09:21:14 AM Now that I am driving my S1 after its 'restoration' I am bothered by a loud and regular 'clonk' from the rear when going over pot-holes and bumps in the road. All the rubber in the rear was replaced and new shox installed. I have emptied the boot. Is the exhaust prone to swaying about? If I grab hold of the rear pipe it seems pretty well located. Any suggestions? I think I remember the same affliction on my previous Coupe.

Although you've had all the bushes replaced it would still be a good idea to have it in the air and look at the panhard rod bushes again, as the noise you are describing sounds like mine did on my 2c when the combined rubber & metal bushes failed.Brian 8227 8) Title: Re: Rear end clonking Post by: Neil on 09 August, 2021, 11:44:56 AM Did you replace the shackle blocks that are attached on the rear of the springs which are under the boot floor?
Title: Re: Rear end clonking Post by: lancialulu on 09 August, 2021, 01:11:33 PM silencer s probably the culprit. look for witness marks.
Or something loose in the boot?.... Title: Re: Rear end clonking Post by: dhla40 on 09 August, 2021, 04:15:10 PM My clonk was shock top mounting bolt not tight enough.
Sean Title: Re: Rear end clonking Post by: Neil on 09 August, 2021, 04:28:21 PM That was an easy fix, I found my were loose but my suspension squeaked.
Title: Re: Rear end clonking Post by: simonpen on 20 August, 2021, 01:25:42 PM Problem solved. Started the car and the exhaust fell off which meant I had to get underneath and have a good look. It looks to me as if someone has fitted a S2 exhaust to my car which just does not fit properly resulting in the exhaust hitting the panhard rod mount.
