Also whilst on the subject of insurance, I note that unless a vehicle is declared to be "off road"by means of a "SORN" vehicles need to be insured as the law demands at all times.richard

Richard, that is almost true, except for cars that were not on the road before the SORN process was introduced, but as soon as they are returned to use they would be subject to car tax and insurance or SORN if taken off the road again.

Thanks Neil, "Cars not on the road before the SORN process was introduced" Imports apart surely most cars which pre-date SORN have been UK road registered and "on the road" at some point. My brother in law's story springs to mind.He had an Alfa in long term storage in his fathers garage which had not been on the road nor taxed for years. The first he knew about SORN was a fine from the authorities! Not wanting to get mixed up in any nonsense I have visited the DVLA who add that not only must a car be insured but it must be insured by the registered keeper. So if for example a car is in a showroom being sold on behalf of its owner and insured on the traders policy the keepership should be transferred to the showroom company.richard.

That is not nice, a bit a shock, I must keep quiet about my Fulvia off the road for many years (pre-SORN) and my mum's 1960 Mini also off the road since the mid 90s.

Been with Aon / FJ for the last 6 year with my Delta HPE HF after swapping from Adrian flux after an accident saw my policy rise from £550 to £1000, Aon wanted £480 fully comp.
Having changed jobs and getting a company car put the car on a classic policy again with Aon and reduced cost to £280.
This year saw the cost rise to £350 so shopped around. Adrain Flux said they could do it for £300 but when push found this was with out breakdown cover, leagal aid true quote £480 with limited 3000 miles.
Contacted Hagery direct and they quoted £240 including agreed valuation with olny photos needed to secure.

Having been with AON and Footman James for well over a decade FJ said they were passing my policy to Equity as I had a modern Lancia (2007 Ypsilon S2). I was assured of good service and I didn't even get a renewal notice! That was enough for me to approach Direct Line who insure my wifes car and they were happy to take on a LHD. I paid £312 in 2011 Fully Comp and Direct Line came in at £229 a year later, a saving of £83. I'm happy!
