Title: Speedo Cable
Post by: dannels on 16 August, 2023, 08:39:01 AM
Hi All,

I have a bouncing speedo needle and a ticking from the cable so I need to lubricate the cable. I have some white Litiium grease that should do the job.

Has anyone done this? I assume I can pull the cable out from the sleeve. Can I disconnect from the speedo and pull the centre cable out from this end or do I need to disconnect both ends?

All advice appreciated!

Cheers
Dave

Hi Dave,
Don't use any grease or oil to lubricate speedo cable. It will work its way up the cable and gum up the mechanism.
Instead use powdered graphite such as it used to lubricate locks. Clean the cable and then dust on the powder as you reinsert it.
You should be able to undo outer sheath from behind the speedo and withdraw cable.  When reinserting it make sure that it is fully seated at the gearbox end. The squared end at the speedo end should protrude about 3/8" from the end shroud.
However, in spite of the foregoing, a 'flicking' needle usually means that there is wear in the bearing in the speedo head. You might need to take the instrument to a speedo specialist...if you can find an old-school one!
Cheers
Brian.

I've had great service from these guys before

Don't rule out the outer cable having a kink or tightspot, they can also make a cable from your old one as I've had them do before.
